Light bulbs are rated by watts, but how bright is the light really? For example, a 100-watt light bulb is brighter than a 60-watt light bulb when both operate at the same voltage of 120 volts. The brightness of any given wattage depends on what other factors are in play. The brightness of a 100-watt light bulb is not twice as bright as the 60 watt one because at 120 volts, less current flows through it to generate that amount of power. The higher voltage in this case simply allows more electrons to pass through the filament inside and thus produce more photons or light energy per second. But if you want your room lit up quickly with high intensity lighting—say for an emergency situation when there’s no time to dither about which type you need, then select a halogen worklight with 100 watts or more (look for lumens).
