You want to understand how a motor has worked and how the parts fit together, rather than just the mechanics of it. The history of an engine should be read and understood before you go and build one.
There’s a lot of work to be done with motors, especially on the road, but all of this is pretty much part of the process of building a motorcycle.
I’d say start with the history of the engine, so you can understand how it works and be a good judge of how to build it.
